Working to Improve More than the Environment in the City of Newark
Company // Posted: Mar2015
Our team recognizes the many challenges that hinder community improvement. That's why this March our Principal, Zach Lewis, joined several small business owners from throughout New Jersey to raise money for the City's initiative, My Brother's Keeper Newark (MBKN). MBKN was established by Mayor Ras Baraka in response to President Barak Obama's February 2014 challenge to improve economic, educational, and social outcomes for men and boys of color. According to a representative from the organization, "MBKN will dive deep to help achieve specific outcomes: Children will enter school prepared, read at grade level by grade three, graduate from high school, complete post-secondary education, be employed, and stay safe from violent crime." Already, MBKN has made unprecedented strides, such as opening positive and productive dialogues between hundreds of teens and the City Police Department. For more information please visit the MBKN website at: http://www.ci.newark.nj.us/brothers-keeper-newark/

Hillside Public Library Looking to Reopen Doors Spring 2015
Industry // Posted: Mar2015
In August 2014, LCG was retained by the Township of Hillside, New Jersey to develop an Asbestos-Containing Materials (AMC) Removal Workplan and provide monitoring and oversight for ACM abatement activities at the Hillside Public Library as part of a larger overall restoration project encompassing the entire Hillside Municipal Complex. On August 28, 2013, a crippling flood struck the building leaving residents without a library for nearly 17 months. After its initial closure, library personnel originally anticipated reopening in September 2013, then again in November 2013. Several months later, when Mayor Angela Garretson took office in January 2014, she stated, "Cleanup efforts at the library were hallway completed; asbestos abatement and mold removal remained as pressing environmental issues."
Therefore, in August 2014, LCG teamed up with general contractors, Belier Construction Corporation and abatement contractors, B&G Restoration, Inc. to complete the major renovation activities. Subsequent to the completion of daily visual dust inspections and collection and analysis of ambient air samples, LCG provided the Township with an ACM Abatement Clearance Report, assuring a safe environment for the citizens of the Township of Hillside to enjoy. "It's brighter, it's airier, it's a more open-concept", said Mayor Garretson. This month, library workers have been working diligently to restock the shelves and otherwise organize the newly updated facility.

Newark Housing Authority Selects LCG for Environmental Remediation of Proposed TREC Site
Company // Posted: Dec2014
The Newark Housing Authority (NHA) has selected LCG to oversee soil remediation activities at the Authority's proposed Training, Recreation, and Education Center (TREC) site. The proposed site is located on Dayton Street and is currently comprised of vacant, NHA-owned land, awaiting redevelopment. Upon completion, the TREC site will provide a state-of-the-art community resource with smart classrooms, a computer lab, offices, childcare options, a community kitchen, an indoor gymnasium, designated classrooms for senior events, community gathering spaces and a comprehensive range of programs for all residents to participate. LCG personnel will deploy to the site to conduct an investigation of staged soil piles and sub-surface soils. Following the analysis, LCG will determine the classification for on-site soils and advise the NHA on the most cost-effective choice, either re-use or disposal.
